Coimbatore: An intensive diarrhoea prevention camp will be held in Coimbatore from today till May 25, deputy director of health Department Aruna said.

In a press release, she said:

Diarrhoea is responsible for 10% of all deaths in children under the age of five in India. Along with pneumonia, it is a public health issue. Every year, around 1 lakh children in our country die as a result of diarrhoea.

In view of this, the Government of Tamil Nadu has planned to conduct a two-week intensive diarrhoea prevention camp. The main objective of the scheme is to completely avoid death due to diarrhoea in children below the age of five years.

From today, the programme will be held in Anganwadi centres, health sub-centres, all government primary health centres, and government hospitals throughout the Coimbatore district.

The Department of Public Health is in charge of public health. This work will involve field workers and supervisors from various departments, including the School Education Department and the Integrated Child Development Programme.

In this programme, anganwadi workers and health nurses will be trained on the importance of hygiene. ORS packets (one per kid) will be distributed to families with children under the age of five.

Also, children with diarrhoea will be diagnosed and given ORS and zinc tablets and referred to the nearest government primary health centre. The scheme will benefit 3.17 lakh children below the age of five years.
